WinDirStat is a practical utility for finding out what is filling up a Windows hard drive. The program organizes its results in three main ways. The directory list shows folders in a familiar Windows Explorer-style layout, sorted by size so you can see where the biggest storage demands are coming from. The extension list groups files by type, which is useful if you want to know whether videos, music, images, archives, or other formats are responsible for most of your used space. The treemap gives a color-coded block view of your drive, making large files stand out at a glance.

WinDirStat is especially useful when your PC is low on storage and you need a clearer picture before deleting anything. You can scan all drives or focus on a single drive, including internal and external hard drives. The generated reports can also be customized, with options such as changing colors, adjusting brightness, adding grids or stripes, and changing the language.

Cleanup is built into the interface, so once you identify files you no longer need, you can remove them directly. This is convenient, but it is also the program’s main caution point. WinDirStat does not stop you from deleting important system files, and files can be removed without going to the Recycle Bin. Users should review selections carefully before confirming deletion.
