Stay connected to trends and conversations with X
X, formerly known as Twitter, is a social networking app for following live conversations, sharing short updates, and keeping up with public discussion. On Windows, it is best understood as a direct way to access your X profile, timeline, messages, notifications, search, and trending topics from one familiar interface.
The core experience remains simple: you follow accounts, other users follow you, and posts appear across profiles and feeds. Posts can include text within a 280-character limit, plus images, videos, GIFs, links, polls, and voice posts. Polls are especially useful for quick feedback, with up to four answer choices and adjustable durations. You can also control who sees a post, choosing broader visibility or limiting it to followers or mentioned users.
Navigation is easy to grasp, with clear sections for the home feed, notifications, direct messages, search, and Explore. The feed is split between content from accounts you follow and posts X thinks may interest you. Explore remains useful for seeing hashtags, news, entertainment, and popular discussions in one place.
X also includes newer features such as Grok 2, an AI chatbot, along with paid options for reduced ads and verification. However, these are tied to premium subscriptions. Ads still appear as promoted posts for regular users, and the current verification system can be confusing because badges are linked to paid accounts rather than only public figures or organizations.
There are a few limitations to keep in mind. Unregistered users have restricted search access and are largely limited to Explore. The rebrand also changed familiar terms such as tweets and retweets to posts and reposts, which may take adjustment for longtime users.
Overall, X is best for people who want a fast-moving place for public conversation, news discovery, creator updates, and direct interaction. It is easy to use, flexible in what you can share, and useful for staying informed, but users should be aware of ads, paid feature limits, and the changing meaning of verification.
