New users may still need time to learn where everything is, but the layout is practical once you understand the basics.

Recent updates add useful refinements, including support for ASE and ACB palette formats, a hard-edge foreground-to-transparent gradient, better handling of GIFs with non-square pixel ratios, improved text editing behavior, clearer lock-button feedback, and security fixes related to several image formats and package dependencies.

There are limitations. GIMP is powerful, but it may not cover every advanced professional workflow, and some bugs can still appear. Also, while it can open many file types, its native XCF files may not be accepted by other image editors.

Overall, GIMP is best for students, hobbyists, designers, illustrators, and budget-conscious users who need a serious editor for everyday and advanced image work. It is not the simplest app for quick one-click edits, but for free software, it offers impressive depth and control.
