Free Midi Player is a focused Windows program for opening and playing MIDI files without the extra complexity of a general media library. Its main appeal is that it treats MIDI as its own format, showing more than just a play button and a timeline.

The interface is compact and straightforward. You open a MIDI file, then use basic playback controls such as Play and Stop. A central display shows useful file information, including the track name, length, and playback progress. Below that, a virtual piano shows the notes being played, with active keys highlighted in blue. This makes the program more informative than a basic audio player, especially for users who want to follow the structure of a song visually.

Free Midi Player also offers some practical sound controls. You can adjust volume, tempo, and key offset using sliders, and you can choose from more than a hundred instruments to render the MIDI file differently. These options make it useful for casual listening, simple practice, or checking how a MIDI arrangement sounds with another instrument.

There are some usability drawbacks. The window is small, which makes the sliders harder to control precisely. Although numerical values are shown, they cannot be typed in directly, so fine adjustments can be awkward. The progress bar also does not work as a seek control, meaning you cannot easily jump to a specific part of a track. Playback options are limited, and some MIDI files may cause the program to crash.
