Microsoft Silverlight is a free browser plug-in and application framework built to run interactive media and rich internet applications on Windows. For users, Silverlight is mostly something you encounter when an older site or service requires it. In its prime, it was used for high-profile streaming events and online video services because it could support high-resolution and HD video, adaptive streaming, and common Microsoft media formats such as WMV and WMA. It also supports formats such as H.264 and VC-1 under specific licensing conditions, making it useful for media-heavy browser experiences.

Under the surface, Silverlight relies on Microsoft’s XAML for interface layout, vector graphics, and animation. It is also tied to the .NET framework, which gave developers flexibility when building rich applications with familiar Microsoft development tools. It can work with XML data and load extra assets such as media, scripts, and application content when needed.

In everyday use, Silverlight is not something most modern users will actively choose. It is best understood as a compatibility tool for older websites, internal business systems, or archived media services that were designed around it. When supported, it can provide a straightforward click-to-watch or interactive app experience.

The biggest limitation is its age. Microsoft ended support for Silverlight in 2021, so it no longer receives official updates. Browser plug-ins also carry security and privacy concerns, and many streaming platforms and websites have moved to newer web technologies. Developers may also find the platform difficult to justify for new projects.

Overall, Microsoft Silverlight is mainly useful for maintaining access to legacy Windows web applications and older media services. For new websites, apps, or streaming experiences, it is no longer a practical long-term choice.
