Free LAN messaging with file sharing
IP Messenger is a practical Windows chat tool designed for people who need to communicate inside the same local network. Instead of relying on a central server, it uses TCP/IP and UDP to find other users on the LAN, making it a good fit for offices, classrooms, labs, or small teams that want simple internal messaging.
The app keeps things straightforward. Users appear in a contact list automatically when they are on the same network, and sending a message is as simple as selecting a name and typing into the message box. It can also sit quietly in the system tray, alerting you when a new message arrives, so it does not need to stay open on the desktop all the time.
IP Messenger is not limited to plain text. It supports file and folder transfers, embedded images, and desktop capture, which makes it useful for sharing screenshots, documents, or quick visual explanations with nearby colleagues. There is also a message sealing option, and the app includes encrypted messaging features for more private exchanges.
For workplace use, chat logging is available, but it is not as modern as threaded conversation history in newer messaging apps. Logs need to be enabled in the settings, and conversation history is viewed separately rather than as a continuous chat timeline. This is functional, but not especially elegant.
The main drawback is the interface. It feels dated and very utilitarian, with few visual comforts. However, that simplicity is also part of its appeal: IP Messenger focuses on fast internal communication, lightweight operation, and direct file sharing.
Overall, IP Messenger is best for users who want a free, no-frills LAN messenger for everyday internal communication. It is less suitable for teams needing cloud sync, mobile access, or a polished modern chat experience.
