Modern tabbed file manager for Windows

Modern tabbed file manager for Windows

Files is a Windows file manager built for users who like the idea of File Explorer but want a cleaner, more current interface. Its main appeal is visual: it uses a modern Fluent Design style, includes light and dark modes, and has icons that feel more consistent with the look of Windows 10. For everyday browsing through documents, downloads, pictures, and folders, it feels more polished and touch-friendly than the older built-in experience.

The most useful feature is tab support. Instead of opening several separate windows, you can keep multiple folder locations open in one place and switch between them like browser tabs. This is especially handy if you often move files between folders or compare different directories. Files also supports dragging an item over a tab or folder to open that location, which can make placing files into a specific folder more convenient.

OneDrive handling is another practical strength. The app lets you work with cloud-stored files and includes options related to freeing up space, which is helpful if you use Microsoft’s cloud storage regularly. It is designed to work with both mouse and touch input, so it fits desktops, laptops, and tablets reasonably well.

That said, Files is not yet a complete replacement for the standard Windows file manager. Some areas still need refinement, and users may notice slower loading when opening folders or file locations. Bug issues have also been noted, so anyone who depends on file management for heavy daily work may prefer to treat it as a modern companion rather than a full substitute.

Overall, Files is best for Windows users who want a better-looking, tabbed, more modern way to browse and organize files. It is practical, pleasant to use, and especially appealing for casual organization and OneDrive users, but it still needs more optimization before it can fully take over core file management duties.
