Free network traffic analyzer for Windows
Wireshark is a free, open-source tool for inspecting the data packets moving through a network. In practical terms, it helps you see what is happening on a home, office, or internet-connected network so you can investigate performance problems, suspicious activity, or misconfigured traffic.
The Windows version can capture and examine traffic from several sources, including WiFi, Ethernet, VLAN, Bluetooth, and USB. Once active, it presents packets in a detailed table showing information such as source, destination, time, protocol, and size. Selecting a packet reveals deeper technical details in lower panels, which is useful when you need to understand exactly how a connection is behaving.
Wireshark’s biggest strength is its depth. You can work with live network captures or review saved sessions, apply filters to narrow down busy traffic, and use expressions to search for specific packet patterns. Color coding helps make repeated packet types easier to spot, while the statistics section can summarize conversations between IP addresses, protocols, and HTTP requests or responses. There is also an Expert Information area that collects possible issues, although not every entry means something is seriously wrong.
The software supports exporting captured information to local files in formats such as CSV, XML, PostScript, and text, making it useful for documentation or further analysis. It also includes VoIP analysis and support for read and write capture formats.
The trade-off is accessibility. Wireshark is organized, but its interface looks dated, and the amount of information can be intimidating if you are not familiar with networking basics. It is not a simple “fix my internet” button; it is a diagnostic tool that rewards careful investigation.
Wireshark is best for IT staff, developers, network administrators, security-minded users, and advanced home users who want visibility into network traffic. It is legal to use on networks you own or are authorized to monitor, but it should not be used to inspect other people’s networks without permission.
