TunnelBear is a Windows VPN built for people who want online privacy without having to learn networking terms. Its main appeal is simplicity: you choose a country, switch protection on, and the app routes your connection through an encrypted VPN tunnel.

The interface is friendly and easy to understand, using a world map to show available server locations. TunnelBear offers servers in just over 20 locations, which is enough for basic privacy needs but limited compared with more advanced VPN setups. It also lacks helpful details such as server load, ping time, or a location search box, so users who like fine control may find it a bit too simple.

Security is where TunnelBear feels more convincing. It uses OpenVPN with 256-bit AES encryption, includes a strict no-logging policy, and is designed to prevent data leaks. Its Vigilant mode works like a kill switch, blocking exposed traffic if the VPN connection drops. Trusted Networks lets you mark safe Wi-Fi networks, while GhostBear disguises VPN traffic as regular HTTPS traffic to help avoid VPN blocking. The trade-off is that GhostBear can reduce performance, so it is best used only when needed.

The free plan is useful for testing the service, but its 500 MB monthly bandwidth limit is too small for regular browsing, downloads, or video. Paid plans remove that data limit and add support for multiple simultaneous connections. TunnelBear also supports privacy-focused use cases such as torrenting and TOR.
