Tera Term is a practical terminal emulator for Windows users who need to connect a PC to remote systems, network services, or serial devices. It supports classic terminal types such as DEC VT100 and VT382, and it can handle TCP/IP connections through Telnet, SSH1, and SSH2, as well as direct serial port communication.

The program is best understood as a straightforward communications tool. When opened, it lets you choose between TCP/IP and serial connection modes. For network access, you enter a host and select the service type. For serial use, you choose the relevant port and can adjust settings such as baud rate, data bits, parity, stop bits, and flow control. The default baud rate is 9600 bps, which suits many common serial workflows.

Tera Term’s interface is simple rather than modern. The main window uses a traditional terminal view, with a menu bar for file, editing, setup, control, window, and help options. This makes it approachable once you understand the basics, although first-time users may still need to know what connection type and settings their device or server requires.

Useful everyday features include local echo, which lets you see the data you type before it is sent, plus options to clear the visible screen or the stored buffer. It can also be used for task automation and data collection, making it suitable for developers, IT workers, hardware technicians, and anyone managing serial or remote connections from a Windows PC.

Tera Term is free, open-source, lightweight, and available in several languages, with English and Japanese among the most current. Its open-source nature and lack of in-app advertising are reassuring for users who prefer transparent utilities.

The main limitation is platform support: it is designed for Microsoft Windows, including older Windows versions, and is not a cross-platform solution. It also looks and feels utilitarian. Still, for dependable SSH, Telnet, and serial communication on Windows, Tera Term remains a capable and focused choice.
