Free Windows resource editor for apps
Resource Hacker is a compact utility for inspecting and changing the resource files inside Windows programs. It is aimed at users who want to adjust items such as icons, bitmaps, logos, menus, dialogs, and other embedded application resources in files like EXE, DLL, and SCR.
The software uses a straightforward graphical interface, so you are not forced to work only from the command line. Open a supported file and its resources are organized for viewing, editing, extracting, or replacing. Visual resources can be displayed directly, while other content may appear as decompiled text or readable binary-style text. One important limitation is that binary images are not edited inside Resource Hacker itself. Instead, you can export them, change them in a separate image editor, and import them back.
For more advanced users, Resource Hacker also includes a capable command-line system. It can compile and decompile resource scripts, work with RC and RES files, and perform actions such as add, overwrite, extract, delete, modify, and change language settings. It also supports scripting, logging, and several compiler directives, which makes it useful for repeatable resource-editing tasks rather than one-off manual changes only.
In everyday use, its biggest strengths are that it is free, lightweight, and free from built-in ads or pop-up notifications. It is available for Windows PCs on both 32-bit and 64-bit systems, including older versions such as XP and Vista as well as Windows 7, 8, and 10.
Resource Hacker is best suited to developers, modders, translators, and technically curious users who need to examine or customize Windows application resources. Beginners can still explore the interface without deep programming knowledge, but the tool is specialized, so careful use and some guidance are sensible. Its main drawback is platform support: it is a Windows-only utility, not a cross-platform editor.
