Feature rich media playback for Windows

PotPlayer is a capable Windows media player built for users who want broad format support and plenty of control over playback. It handles video and audio files across many common formats, including larger files such as AVI, MKV, and MOV, while also supporting DVDs, Blu-rays, local files, URLs, FTP sources, and digital or analog TV input.

At first glance, PotPlayer looks fairly simple. The main window is minimalist, and most important tools are available through a right-click menu. Behind that plain surface, though, is a deep set of options. You can adjust video appearance with filters and effects, sharpen or blur the image, rotate clips, reduce noise, change levels, and customize subtitle display. Subtitle support is strong, including common formats such as SRT and ASS, with automatic display when subtitle files are stored alongside the video.

PotPlayer also includes features that go beyond basic playback. There is a screen recorder, playlist handling with drag-and-drop support, detailed playback information, audio presets, visualizations, 360-degree video support, and 3D playback options for compatible setups. Users with supported NVIDIA RTX graphics cards can also benefit from RTX Video HDR support in recent versions, which can improve compatible video output by remapping SDR content toward HDR10.

The trade-off is complexity. The default settings should be enough for most everyday viewing, but some menus can feel crowded, especially if you only want to play a movie and move on. The default skin may also look dated, although the interface can be customized with different skins. Another minor annoyance is that PotPlayer tends to remain in the notification tray rather than behaving like a standard taskbar-focused app.

Overall, PotPlayer is best for Windows users who play many file types, use subtitles often, or want detailed control over video and audio settings. Casual viewers may find it more feature-heavy than necessary, but for flexible media playback, it is a strong and practical choice.
