MathType is a Windows equation editor built for people who need more than the basic formula tools found in standard word processors. It helps create mathematical notation, scientific expressions, and structured formulas for documents, presentations, worksheets, research papers, and eLearning material.

The main workspace is a visual editor where you build equations by choosing symbols, templates, and structures from on-screen panels. Its interface is compact and can feel busy at first, with rows of buttons and tabs for areas such as algebra, statistics, matrices, sets, trigonometry, and geometry. Once you understand the layout, though, it is practical: you click what you need, edit the expression, then place it into another application.

MathType is especially useful with Microsoft Word and PowerPoint. In Word, it supports inline and centered equations, equation numbering, references, and batch formatting changes such as spacing, style, and font size. In PowerPoint, it helps prepare clearer mathematical slides and supports equation coloring, including CMYK, RGB, and spot color for publishing workflows.

The software also supports TeX, LaTeX, and MathML, making it suitable for users who need formulas in markup-based formats. Equations can be exported as EPS, GIF, WMF, or PICT files, and Windows object linking and embedding support allows formulas to remain editable inside Office and OpenOffice documents. For web use, MathType can also generate HTML-based output for pasting into compatible services.

Customization is a strong point. Users can assign keyboard shortcuts to symbols, templates, and commands, which is helpful for frequent equation writing. On Windows 7 and later, pen or touch input through the math input panel is also supported.

The main drawback is that the number of tools may overwhelm casual users. MathType is best for students, teachers, researchers, technical writers, and presenters who regularly work with complex notation and want polished, editable results.
