Retro RPG storytelling with heart
Deltarune for Windows is a free role-playing game from Toby Fox, the creator of Undertale, but it is not simply a sequel or prequel. It uses some familiar faces and a similar sense of humor, yet its setting, main cast, and story direction are separate enough for newcomers to start here without feeling lost.
The game follows Kris, Susie, Ralsei, and Lancer through a strange underground adventure filled with puzzles, monsters, dialogue, and unusual combat encounters. Like Undertale, Deltarune puts a strong emphasis on personality and choice, with a tone that can shift from silly to emotional very quickly. Its writing is one of its biggest strengths, especially in the way the characters clash, bond, and slowly reveal more about themselves.
Visually, Deltarune leans into a retro pixel-art style inspired by older 8-bit games. That gives it a nostalgic look, but the jokes, pacing, and character interactions feel much more modern. The soundtrack is also a major part of the experience, mixing playful, tense, and emotional themes that help make key moments stand out.
The first two chapters are available for free and provide several hours of story-focused play. The full project is planned across seven chapters, with later chapters forming paid content. This is important to know before starting, because the story is still unfolding and some plot threads are intentionally unresolved.
Deltarune is easy to recommend to players who enjoy narrative-driven RPGs, quirky humor, and character-focused adventures. It is also suitable for younger players who are comfortable reading dialogue and following story instructions. However, it may not satisfy users looking for realistic graphics, a complete story in one package, or a traditional combat-heavy RPG. For everyone else, it is a charming and unusual Windows game with enough personality to stand confidently on its own.
